The 5G technology launched by Orange Botswana on Friday offers a depth of possibilities for the market, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has said.

“The 5G technology offers immense opportunities for businesses, citizens and the government, and it accords data by sensors which will translate into businesses that will develop applications and services from all sectors,” he told guests at the launch.

Commending Orange Botswana for the initiative, the President said ultimately the technology ensured solutionist-thinking to enhance every Motswana’s ability to communicate and connect better.

According to Dr Masisi, 5G enhanced Internet would facilitate transformation of agricultural services, health care and other essential services that would directly benefit citizens.

The President said digital technology and building upon the advances of computing, was one of the cutting-edge technologies of the modern times.

The opening up of avenues for the acquisition of digital literacy by the many in society was therefore imperative, he said. Dr Masisi said Information Telecommunication Technology (ICT) in general had the potential to unlock opportunities across a spectrum of sectors.

“ICT aids our economy, be it the financial services sector, health care sector and the communications space. For individuals, organisations and businesses, we are able to be more efficient, more connected and more empowered to do more, deliver more and create more,” he said. He said Batswana, through technology, were enabled to shape a stronger presence as they learnt to grow and build their technological capacity, to enhance digital literacy and buttress the technological infrastructure within their reach.

President Masisi said ICT, together with the  Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), worked together to ensure and provide government and the private sector with possibilities of improvement in efficiency, productivity, economic growth and the wellbeing of society.

“This is why government has worked to establish a number of programmes and projects that prioritise digitalisation. Indeed, digitalisation is the third priority in our Reset Agenda, for we recognise that it has immense potential to unlock and enable high productivity among our people,” he said.

President Masisi pointed out that the global village ran on the wheels of digitalisation which he said was the quintessential service delivery improvement tool.  BOPA
