Police warn donkey cart drivers

Donkey cart drivers must stay off the roads at night, as their presence is not only a danger to themselves but also to other road users.
Serowe Police station commander superintendent Poloko Oteng issued the warning during an interview that followed an incident in which a Toyota Vitz crashed into two donkey carts along Serowe-Shoshong road on the night of October 31.
Supt Oteng said donkey cart owners must fit reflectors to their vehicles to make it easy for motorists to see them at night.
Regarding the accident, he said the Toyota Vitz driver who was suspected to be drunk, crashed into the donkey carts, leaving their four occupants, boys aged between 12 and 17, with minor injuries.
Supt Oteng said the Toyota Vitz driver also escaped with minor injuries. “One donkey cart had two boys aged 17 and 16 years, while the other also had two passenger occupants, boys aged 16 and 12 years.
The four boys sustained minor injuries on the legs, waists and on their backs, while the car driver had a neck injury” he said.
Supt Oteng said the four boys and the driver were rushed to hospital, where they were treated and released to recuperate at home on the same day.
Touching other issues, he said that during the usual random stop, question and search exercises, they found learners in possession of sharp objects including knives and scissors.
Such learners were taken to the local kgotla for flogging, he said.
Supt Oteng also said the police kept an eye on all junior secondary schools in Serowe to ensure that there was no disturbance of peace on Friday as the Form 3’s sat for their final examination paper.
Regarding the festive season, he encouraged members of the public to guard against criminal activities in their localities.
“I encourage the society to engage in neighbourhood watch schemes. People should report immediately when suspecting or noticing any illegal activities so that the police can attend issues on time,” he said. Supt Oteng further asked the public to join hands with the police during the 60 Days of Action on Crime and Road Safety by patrolling their neighbourhoods.
He said the police were working hard to fight crime and their relentless effort had seen crime levels going down. Ends
