Communication key to healthy marriage

Good communication skills will take you far in any relationship, whether in your family or work place, marriage evangelist Ms Ashley Thaba has said.
Speaking recently in Gaborone during a women empowerment seminar hosted by MmeMma Woman of Excellence, she noted that it was a worthy investment to take time to work on one’s communication skills.
“Investing into learning to communicate with your spouse guarantees you a better marriage and most likely a best friend to share your life with,” she said.
You should never assume your partner knows what you are thinking or feeling, tell your spouse what is going on and as a spouse know when to simply listen,” she said.
She said a communication gap in marriage could often lead to a failed relationship, therefore partners should always open up and express their deep feelings and avoid burying hurt and anger.
Ms Thaba also encouraged partners to spend time together, highlighting that when spending time with your partner you will better understand each other’s differences and how to negotiate the problems they may cause.
In her remarks, founder of MmeMmma Woman of Excellence, Ms Phio Pule said the platform was established in 2013 as an empowerment link for women, boys and girls.
She said it was an epitome par excellence running with a tag line; Women of Excellence, translating to mean in all that a woman does, excellence must be the main ingredient.
She noted that MmeMma highlighted the importance of equipping women with the relevant skills to successfully lead families and be suitable helpers to their husbands.
She explained that this year’s empowerment seminar theme; Bruised Heel, became relevant to what most women were going through and it was extracted from the Bible book of Genesis 3:15.
“It is very important to know that women play a pivotal role in raising children and keeping up families, hence they need to meet and renew their energy for this taxing role,” she said.
In empowering women, Ms Pule emphasised the importance of making God the pillar of homes.
She also encouraged people to support marriages and families.
For her part, Ms Priscillah Ndadi urged women to always work with their partners and always be transparent in everything they did, especially with the finances.
She encouraged them to have mentors and life coaches for their marriages to be healthy and successful.
She advised single ladies to invest on pre-marital counselling before they got married and encouraged them to read and understand Marriage Act before they got married. ENDS
