Govt to resuscitate Karakubis water project
01 Nov 2022
Karakubis community water project, which has not been in operation for months due to break down of reverse osmosis system, is to be resuscitated.
Briefing Ghanzi South Member of Parliament, Mr Motsamai Motsamai during a tour of the facility on Tuesday, Constituency Community Development Projects coordinator at Charleshill Sub-district Council, Mr Peet Mogalakwe explained that after the breakdown of the reverse osmosis system, a company that supplied the system, Multi Waste, made a diagnosis and established that a reverse osmosis regulator adaptor was damaged.
The company is yet to supply and install it.
He said the fact that Water Utilities Corporation had disconnected water at the facility due to high bill, would delay the replacement process as reverse osmosis regulator adaptor replacement would require testing.
Mr Mogalakwe revealed that the project had been disconnected because the water bill stood at over P30 000, adding that the high water usage would remain a challenge as about 60 per cent of water was lost in the purification process, while only 40 per cent became potable.
He further expressed worry that groundwater at Karakusis was reportedly contaminated so much that the community complained about sour or unpleasant taste.
This development, he feared, could result in losing more water during the purification process, saying the wastage could even rise to 70 per cent.
This, he said, called for the need to balance expenditure with profit to ensure the sustainability of the project.
He also suggested that they might need to find an alternative source of water.
“We are in the process of coming up with a workable plan regarding this project,” he added.
Another challenge, he said, was that the new village development committee members were yet to be appointed signatories of the project account.
For his part, Karakubis Primary School head, Mr Joseph Keoogane told the MP that the school intended to rehabilitate and repurpose the old kitchen into a library.
The project is envisaged to help improve academic performance. MP Motsamai appealed to government employees to expedite implementation of CCP projects to benefit the community and change the landscape of Charleshill sub-district.
He said Karakubis water project had potential to do better as it was the only one in the sub-district. ENDS
