Cancer should be discussed on a regular basis so that friends, family and colleagues are informed about the disease and how to prevent it, says Ghanzi principal health education technician, Mr Kebonyethebe Keaitse.

He also implored women to familiarise themselves with the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and to screen for the disease regularly.

Mr Keaitse made the plea after a breast cancer awareness stiletto walk by Ghanzi Land Board staff on Friday.

He also said partners should familiarise themselves with their counterparts breasts so that they could help each other to screen for cancer as early detection was key to combating the disease and preventing it from spreading throughout the body.

Besides self-examination, he also said regular clinical breast examinations was the way to go.

He noted that a healthy diet and regular exercise could help prevent conditions that may lead to cancer.

He also noted that tobacco increased changes of developing cancer.

Principal human resource and administration officer at Ghanzi Land Board, Ms Virginia Nteda said the success of the breast cancer awareness campaign was on the shoulders of the society and that relaying awareness messages to friends and family could save lives.

On the objective of cancer awareness month and the stiletto walk, Ghanzi Land Board secretary, Ms Chamalebo Coetzee said men took part in the stiletto walk to show support and compassion to their female counterparts who were more susceptible to breast cancer.

A cancer survivor, Ms Alice Karabo said there was life even when one had cancer.
