 Kanye residents have requested an additional  constituency to balance the stipulated population quota for the two existing constituencies while at the same time improving accessibility of services.

Airing their views during a meeting addressed by the delimitation commission in Kanye on Monday, they suggested that some villages be hived off mostly from Kanye South constituency.

Suggesting that the proposed constituency be named Kanye South West, Mr Motsumi Motsumi said it would include villages such as Selokolela, Sesung, Seherelela, Tsonyane, Lobutse, Lefoko, Maokane and Samane, he said.

Sharing the same sentiments,  Mr Kabelo Lemme adding that the villages of Sese, Segwagwa and Metlobo should also fall under the proposed constituency.

 He said establishment of a new constituency would enhance service delivery in the mentioned areas.“As it is, residents of these villages are disadvantaged because most services are concentrated in densely populated areas like Kanye. This categorisation has nothing to do with background but we are looking at improving accessibility to services,” he said.

For his part, Mr Babi Kgosimodimo said the proposed constituency should also include Moshana, Lorolwane, Pitseng, Betesankwe and Maokane.

Proposing that it be named either Kanye South West, Ngwaketse South West or Maokane, he said the latter should serve as the constituency headquarters.

“We can choose one of the names it does not matter much, but Maokane should be the constituency headquarters because it currently has most government services. All these people share a culture and they speak the same language,” he said.Even though most meeting attendants suggested that Kanye North should be left intact, Mr Kagiso Moleti said it needed to be divided into two. 

He said villages such as Magotlhwane, Kgomokasitwa, Ntlhantlhe, Ranaka and surrounding cattleposts should be removed from Kanye North to make a new constituency named Ngwaketse East.However, Ms Ntshono Tshwene said instead of an additional constituency, some wards in Kanye South should be hived off to Kanye North to balance the population quota in the two constituencies.

Her views were shared by Kgosi Kwelagobe Mookodi, who said Marapalalo ward should be moved from Kanye South to Kanye North.zA member of the commission, Ms Malebogo Masire informed the meeting that a report, with recommendations on constituency boundaries,   would be compiled. ENDS
