Plans are ongoing to transfer training functions of the colleges of education to public universities in a bid to strengthen overall quality and efficiency of teacher training provision.

Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Mr Molebatsi Molebatsi said this in response to a question at Ntlo Ya Dikgosi on Monday on behalf of Minister of Education and Skills Development.

Mr Molebatsi said there were therefore no plans to construct a college of education in the Ghanzi/Kgalagadi region or in any other region in the country.

He said the existing teacher training colleges were constructed to support location efforts in the 1980s and currently the needs of the teaching service had been largely met as over 95 per cent of teachers were citizens.

Kgosi Esau Molehele of Ghanzi East region had wanted to know if the Ministry of Education and Skills Development had any plans to construct a teacher training college in the Ghanzi/Kgalagadi region. ENDS
