Maun Administration Authority becomes full district

23 Oct 2022

Maun Administration Authority (MAA) is among 11 sub-districts that will be upgraded to districts in phase one of the implementation of councils’ restructuring.

The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Sethabelo Modukanele, said this when addressing a consultative meeting in Maun Thursday.

He said some sub-councils were upgraded to help take services closer to the people.

“This is for decision making to be taken closer to the people which would speed up service delivery,” he said.

Mr Modukanele said the move would make MAA independent from Okavango Sub-district, which was also among the 11 to be upgraded.

The assistant minister said the plan was to have the selected 11 operational as full districts by December this year or before the beginning of the 2023/24 financial year.

Kgosi Leretetse Mogalakwe from Batawana Tribal Administration welcomed the decision to upgrade MAA.

However, Kgosi Mogalakwe said the restructuring of councils should not infringe on other legislations such as the Tribal Territorial Act.

One resident, Mr Allen Sokwe, expressed happiness that MAA would be upgraded something that he said was long overdue

Another resident, Ms Obonya Morapedi appreciated that MAA would become a full independent council as well as Okavango Sub- district. ENDS
