Energy survey next month

18 Oct 2022

The national energy use survey scheduled to commence November 1 will provide up-to-date data for planning and policy formulation.

This was said by Minister of Minerals and Energy, Mr Lefhoko Moagi at a press briefing in Gaborone yesterday.

Mr Moagi said P21.4 million had been budgeted for the survey which would be led by his ministry in partnership with Statistics Botswana and Botswana Institute of Technology, Research and Innovation.

He said although a national energy policy and supporting sub-sector strategies as well as the renewable energy and energy efficiency and conservation plans were in place, they were developed with old data and energy statistics.

That resulted in making assumptions and extrapolations which was not ideal as it affected planning decisions, said Mr Moagi.

The minister said the survey would ensure that the review of strategies, investment plans and planning were guided by current and accurate energy statistics.

Its objectives included collecting and analysing data as well as publishing the findings, he explained.

“The survey will collect activity data of all energy carriers, technologies as well as energy use for households and enterprises nationwide. The output or results from the survey will be key to formulation of initiatives, projects and programmes as the country develops NDP 12,” he said.

Mr Moagi said the exercise would employ over 90 people as survey supervisors and enumerators over a period of 12 weeks.

He appealed to the nation to answer questions that would be asked by the enumerators.

The minister said information on how to identify enumerators would be made available on different media outlets and social media platforms to deter fraudsters who masqueraded as field workers in order to defraud individuals and businesses. ends
