KK Motshidisi Foundation has donated eight wheel chairs to Selebi Phikwe Hospital.
Speaking at a handover ceremony on Thursday, foundation chairperson, Mr Kitso Motshidisi said the donation was guided by the needs of the hospital as proposed by MP for Selebi Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse.
He said with Mr Modise Keofithetse of Y CARE Foundation they managed to get more than 60 wheel chairs through a campaign dubbed ‘60 for 60 campaign,’ where they encouraged people to donate wheelchairs to the foundation.
He said the wheel chairs, to be donated around the country, would go a long way in improving many lives, particularly families which could not afford them.
Mr Motshidisi added that the COVID-19 pandemic affected all including government, as such its crucial for the business community and individuals to come on board to help government by donating whatever they had.
Receiving the donation, hospital superintendent Dr Dayana Iraola-Palai thanked the Motshidisi Foundation for the gesture, which would help address the needs of some of the 30 patients needing wheel chairs.
She explained that Selebi Phikwe hospital as a referral hospital serviced close to 160 000 patients from Selebi Phikwe and surrounding areas, but was in short of supply of resources as government alone could not afford to provide everything.
Mr Keorapetse thanked the foundation for heeding the call for assistance, saying such would make a difference in the lives of the people of Selebi Phikwe.
He said the hospital was old and had limited resources, hence the need for it to be refurbished or better still, a new one be built.
He said plans for the new hospital were complete, but government found itself having to prioritise fighting COVID1-9.
He said Selebi Phikwe Hospital used to have 21 doctors and specialists, but the number had dropped to seven doctors.
He said the situation affected Selebi Phikwe residents as quality of service they were used to was nolonger there because of high doctor/patient ratio. ENDS
