Poor attendance at celebrations worrisome

Kgosi Eric Ntshole of Morwa has expressed disappointment over the poor turnout at the kgotla to celebrate Independence Day.
Few people, mostly the elderly turned up for the celebrations at Morwa kgotla.
Members of the Village Development Committee (VDC) saw themselves having to do all the tasks of preparing for the event as well as organising meals and serving people.
This has worried Kgosi Ntshole and village elders as the youths were expected to be playing a leading role.
“The youths should be here as they will in future prepare for this day,” one elder said.
This year, the government did not fund independence celebrations and the villagers came together as a move of patriotism and solidarity.
Kgosi Ntshole urged Batswana to fully participate in the independence celebrations, saying they should not take independence for granted as the Botswana has never experienced war. He further said other celebrations like weddings should not be held on Independence Day.
Independence Day, he said, offered the nation an opportunity to reflect on its journey of development.
He said he expected a fully packed kgotla as celebrations were cancelled in the past due to COVID-19.
Meanwhile, residents born in 1967 donated 55 chairs to be used in the kgotla.
Handing over the chairs, Mr Koketso Sentsho said they decided to donate the chairs as a gesture of appreciation to the community.
He reiterated that this was only the beginning as each year they would continue to make donations.
Those who attended the celebrations did not let the poor turnout dampen their spirits as they danced throughout the proceedings. Ends
