Zone 6 now green zone
10 Nov 2013
The Zone 6 area is now a green zone following successful eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and the recent audit of the containment activities in the area.
A press release from the Ministry of Agriculture stated that the World Animal Health Organisation had reinstated the FMD free without vaccination status in Zone 6. However, the release said the ministry was still to negotiate with its trading partners to return the trade protocols back to normal.
“All relevant role players who participated in these activities that led to this success are sincerely thanked for their contribution, especially the affected farmers in the North East District and Tonota Sub-district,” read the release.
Meanwhile, the release stated that restocking of both cattle and smallstock was continuing and the ministry was also realigning some fences in the area to prevent reoccurrence of the disease. The ministry’s collaboration with Zimbabwe, the release said, would continue for another two years, which entails joint vaccination and surveillance activities along the common border. Ends
