The secretary of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Mr Jefferson Siamisang has expressed gratitude for the contribution made by public employees in the electoral process.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Ghanzi leadership recently, Mr Siamisang said their contribution in the electoral process since independence had preserved the stability and democracy that the country enjoyed. He noted that the electoral process was the backbone of every democracy.
He urged public servants to continue contributing to the electoral process, saying their efforts would help preserve what the country had achieved so far.
The secretary to the IEC also informed the Ghanzi leadership that the electoral process had been activated. He noted that the delimitation exercise could lead to an increase of constituencies.
He advised public servants to know the electoral process order of events, adding that the exercise was a sensitive undertaking.
He appealed to them to always stick to the Electoral Act and to pay due diligence despite tight time frames.
He also challenged public employees to inform themselves on the law regarding the electoral process, adding that in the dispensation of their duties they should be accountable.
Mr Siamisang also informed the district leadership that the youth would be partnered with public servants during the registration process for the coming general election
He also said the youth who would be engaged by the IEC for the next general election would be subjected to a test. On other issues, Mr Siamisang said they were contemplating recommending that the Electoral Act be amended to make it possible for the voters roll to be inspected online.
The Ghanzi leadership urged the IEC to intensify voter education, arguing that negative perceptions about the electoral commission were due to lack of knowledge. ENDS
