Led by Mayor Austin Abraham, Gaborone residents on Friday took to the streets partaking in the clean-up campaign.

The mayor told them that an implementation structure was in place to guide the Gaborone City Council (GCC) in rolling out the campaign in different constituencies around the city before Independence Day.

Mr Abraham explained that the campaign, which started with Gaborone Central constituency, would continue to Gaborone North on September 19, proceeding to Bonnington North the following day then Bonnington South on September 21.

He said it was anticipated that the exercise would be complete at Gaborone South on September 22 and 23.

He also told participants that the main purpose of the campaign was to create awareness, bring a sense of pride and for residents to take ownership of their areas with a shift in mentality towards environmental cleanliness.

Therefore, the mayor urged everyone to take part and join, saying, ‘the success of the campaign relies on you as a collective and you should always be mindful of your environment and clean-up after yourselves.”

For his part, the area Member of Parliament, Mr Tumisang Mangwegape-Healy applauded GCC for its efforts of keeping the city clean.

He called on the residents to take part by picking up litter, weeding and sweeping the streets around their homes.  ENDS
