Ghanzi proposes new constituency
14 Sep 2022
Residents of Ghanzi have proposed the establishment of another constituency in the area, arguing that the move would enhance political representation.
Making submissions before Delimitation Commission in Ghanzi on Tuesday, they said, due to vastness of the district and bad roads as well as cultural dynamics, the establishment of a new constituency would be helpful.
The move, they said, would enable a Member of Parliament to reach out and interact with constituents better, something which they said was well-suited with and complementary to democracy.
The constituents suggested that a portion of Ghanzi South and Ghanzi North should be merged to form a new constituency.
However, there were conflicting views on how to realign the affected constituencies’ boundaries in the process of establishing a new one.
A number of constituents suggested that Ghanzi township should be a standalone constituency and retain the name Ghanzi North or just Ghanzi township, while areas of the current Ghanzi North and South be merged to form a new constituency.
Some suggested that the new constituency should be made up of D’kar, Kuke, Qabo, Grootlagte, West Hanahai ,East Hanahai, Newxade and Kacgae and be named Ghanzi east.
There were those who suggested that the proposed constituency should be made up of areas predominantly on the central location of Ghanzi District and be named Ghanzi central.
In her remarks, Kgosi Annah Rankho of Ghanzi said the delimitation exercise would help to enhance the country’s democracy and appealed to Batswana members to make meanful contributions.
Kgosi Rankho also proposed the establishment of a new constituency. Ends
