Kanye gets adequate water

14 Aug 2022

The Ministry of Lands and Water Affairs supplies adequate volumes of water daily to Kanye.

Minister Dr Kefentse Mzwinila noted that the North-South Carrier (NSC) connection to Kanye allocated 10 million litres per day to Thamaga, Moshupa and Kanye. From this supply, he stated that five million litres per day went to Kanye.

He added that Kanye received a further eight million litres per day of augmentation supplies from adjacent boreholes. He noted that it amounted to a total of 13 million litres per day against a demand of 12 million litres per day for Kanye.

"However, this is yet to be fully benefitted by the residents due to dilapidated network distribution resulting in some areas not benefitting from the scheme as water losses are as high as 50 per cent," said the minister.

Dr Mzwinila also said Lekgolobotlo, Ntlhantlhe, Magotlhwane and Kgomokasitwa were on the other hand supplied from the Gaborone/Lobatse water scheme. He said the four villages received a total of 0.9 million litres per day against a total demand of 1.6 million litres per day, resulting in a deficit of 0.7 million litres per day.

"This is attributed to limitation in capacity and the efficiency of the pump station at Otse supplying the four villages," said the minister.

The minister further said Ranaka was wholly reliant on supply from an existing borehole at the supply rate of 0.3 million litres per day against a demand of 0.7 million litres per day, resulting in a deficit of 0.4 million litres per day. He said the village was isolated from the Gaborone/Lobatse water supply scheme due to supply limitation from the pump station at Otse.

"The above supply limitation would be addressed by the Lobatse Water Masterplan project which is currently under construction and planned to be completed in October 2022," said the minister.

Dr Mzwinila pointed out that Ranaka, Ntlhantlhe, Lekgolobotlo, Magotlhwane and Kgomokasitwa would benefit from additional water supply from the Masama/Mmamashia pipeline through the Lobatse Water Masterplan project.

He added that the ministry was undertaking the Kanye/Moshupa water supply distribution network rehabilitation project. He said the project was aimed to achieve optimisation of the existing network which would reduce water losses, and lead to a 100 per cent water network coverage in all boundaries for the villages of Kanye and Moshupa.

Kanye North MP, Mr Thapelo Letsholo had asked the minister for an update on the water situation in Kanye, Ranaka, Ntlhantlhe, Lekgolobotlo, Magotlhwane and Kgomokasitwa. He also asked about plans to replace leaking underground water pipes in Kanye. ends
