Ministry to address classroom shortage

09 Aug 2022

Madiba Senior Secondary School has a shortage of 12 classrooms.

Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Aubrey Lesaso told Parliament on Monday that the shortage was caused by the reduction in class sizes to comply with COVID-19 protocols.

Mr Lesaso, who was responding to a question, explained that the school had adopted a shifting timetable due to the reduction in class sizes.

“I am also aware of a similar situation that exists in nearly all the schools with class sizes reduced to 30 and shifting timetables adopted.

The ministry wants to construct additional classrooms in all the schools to address this and other shortages we may face,” said the assistant minister.

Mr Lesaso said if  funds permitted construction of new classrooms would be done during National Development Plan 12 to address the burden on space brought about by COVID-19.

Mahalapye West MP, Mr David Tshere had asked the minister if he was aware that Madiba Senior Secondary School needed additional 12 classrooms as a result of COVID-19 regulations that forced schools to reduce the number of pupils per class to 30.

Mr Tshere also wanted to know whether additional classrooms would be constructed at the school.ENDS
