As part of government’s nation-wide plans to improve transport links in the country, and spur on activity, the South East District Council, (SEDC) will soon embark on construction of internal road in Tlokweng.
The council has already awarded the contract for preparatory work. “Service contract for procurement of consultancy services for the detailed design pre-contract, construction supervision and post contract services for the 25 km Tlokweng internal has have been awarded,” chairperson Mr Oshima Peloewetse told a council virtual ordinary meeting Monday.
The P33m contract, awarded to Cistruc Consultants (Pty) Ltd and William Lee was for design and supervision; hydrological analysis, preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan; Archeological Impact Assessment, relocation of services and land expropriation, he said.
Mr Peloewetse explained that consultations with relevant structures were ongoing to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
With regard to maintenance of roads in the district, Mr Peloewetse said the ministry had approved the project memo for maintenance of roads in the sub districts of Tlokweng and South East-South.
Each sub-district would receive P2.5 million. He said the Road Fund Levy of P5 million had been disbursed to Tlokweng and would be used to acquire Earth Moving Plant comprising a 12 tonne Roller, 1 cubic Excavator, 20 cubic Truck as well as Construction of a culvert at Old Mall along Kentse Road.
He said the Constituency Development Project had been funded this year and a project memorandum of P20 million had been sent to the ministry for approval.
Once approved half of the money would be used to install 10km of solar streetlights to improve security and visibility along roads in Tlokweng, while the other half would be used in South East South to implement 8km Water Reticulation Project in the Magope/Disana area,” he said.
With respect to the latter, Mr Peloewetse said council would implement the project in partnership with Water Utilities Corporation (WUC), which would contribute about P1.9 million.
Giving an update of other projects and programmes for the current financial year, the council chairperson said Malete Land Board had a total of 23 354 applicants.
The land board was planning to allocate 1 844 residential plots in Seuwane during the current financial year.
He said a total of 160 applicants were invited to the land board’s meeting of May 22, and 65 were allocated residential plots at Seuwane while 13 were rejected. Mr Peloewetse said at the Tlokweng Land Board, two detailed layout plans in Maratadiba and Sefoke wards had been prepared as part of the Tlokweng Development Plan (2001 -b2030).
“Together these layouts are expected to yield about 4700 residential plots, among other land uses,” he said.
Mr Peloewetse said upon commencement of the implementation of the plan, appropriate steps, would be taken to facilitate their allocation this financial year.
“In addition, the plan proposes intensification of developments within the built up area,” he added.
On agriculture, Mr Peloewetse said government, through the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), established a Beekeeping Field School in Mogobane as a pilot project.
He said South East District had been chosen to pilot the project due to its potential in honey production, as it produces 20.52% of local honey demand. He said should the project be successful it would be replicated in other districts. BOPA
