Fight against corruption major priority

Government has prioritised the fight against corruption, as it has detrimental effect on efforts to deliver services to the people.
This was said by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) senior assistant director for public education, Mr Dominic Khame during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and launch of Anti-Corruption Bill Boards campaign in Mahalapye, Tuesday.
Mr Khame said the campaign, initiated by DCEC in partnership with Central District Council (CDC), was an important milestone in the fight against corruption in the district.
“It bears testimony to the fact that we have not given up in our efforts to fight any form of corruption, but continuing to expedite any workable strategy towards it,” he said.
Additionally, he said the campaign was also meant to educate the public against the evils of corruption, economic crime, and related offences as well as solicit and foster their support in the fight against corruption.
He as the primary anti-corruption agency, the DCEC was cognisant of the fact execution it can not execute their mandatein isolation.
Giving a brief background to the campaign, Mr Khame said in 2021, DCEC Palapye office initiated a partnership with the council, through its Mahalapye and Palapye Sub-Councils to mount the anti-corruption billboards around the district to educate the public against corruption and economic crime and enhance the visibility of DCEC around the district.
He thanked CDC for offering DCEC conducive space for free, along A1 road, to mount the billboards.
Other billboards, of the same size, he said had also been strategically positioned and mounted at the confluence centre’s within the district, being; Martin’s Drift Border Post, Tamasane/Kgagodi junction- along the A1 highway.
Mr Khame revealed that the intention was to mount a similar bill board at Makoba gate, along Letlhakane road during this financial year, adding that he wished to see the initiative extended to other sub-districts.
For his part, CDC chairperson, Mr Ketshwereng Galeragwe thanked DCEC for partnering with the central district in the fight against corruption to protect the country’s resources and economy.
To cement the partnership in the fight against corruption, the DCEC Palapye office and CDC signed an MoU , which detailed how the two would work together to achieve agreed-upon goals and objectives.
The event was also graced by Mahalapye deputy chief, Kgosi Tshipe Tshipe, CDC council secretary, Ms Baipelelang Photlokwe, DCEC Palapye chief anti-corruption officer, Mr Teekay Kaelo, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Anti-Corruption Unit acting project manager, Mr James Kolagano and Mahalapye South Councillor, Ms Abigail Mogalakwe.
