Census mop-up exercise on going until April 13

06 Apr 2022

The census mop-up phase commenced yesterday and will run until April 13, Statistics Botswana has announced A media release from the organisation says that at the close of the census on April 4, the enumeration rate was at 92 percent.

The mop-up phase will therefore give enumerators opportunity to round up their work, which will primarily include visiting households that were not counted during the first and extended phases of data collection.

“It is a standard practice that conforms to national and international standards and it is done to ensure completeness of the Census”, says the release.

The release further says during the mop-up phase, Statistics Botswana and district commissioners will assign resources to areas where enumeration has not been completeds. Its senior corporate communications officer Mr Themba Sibanda said among populations to be visited are those of Kweneng West and parts of Gaborone.

These, he said, had a slow start compared to other census regions due to various reasons including transport shortage and technological glitches at the beginning of the exercise, hence enumerators failing to reach them.

However, he explained data analysis was ongoing with a view to identifying other reasons the populations were missed. He encouraged those yet to be counted to cooperate and allow enumerators into their homes during the mop-up phase. ends
