Botswana Prison Service (BPS) staff on Wednesday donated a house worth P200 000 to the Monabi family of Damochujenaa.
BPS commissioner, Ms Dinah Marathe revealed that the P200 000 was solely from contributions by the BPS staff, spearheaded by Selebi Phikwe prison.
The two and half house, which is the seventh that BPS has donated in the northern division, is registered in the mother’s names, but will be passed on to Raymond Monabi, when he reaches age of majority.
The commissioner further said the Selebi Phikwe prison staff adopted Raymond when he was a pupil at Sedibe Primary School and will assist him material wise until he completes his studies.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Kagiso Mmusi thanked Selebi Phikwe prison staffers for their selflessness and magnanimity in the face of dire financial challenges.
The minister said the good deed was in partial fulfilment of sustainable development goal 10 of reduced inequalities as well as Vision 2036 pillar of human social development as shelter is an essential human need.
Area Member of Parliament, Mr Molebatsi Molebatsi said that not only were Phikwe prison staff magnanimous, but they were also helping to eradicate abject poverty.
“It is commendable to assist government in housing the less privileged…this is truly a nation-building exercise,” said Mr Molebatsi.
The Mmadinare MP reiterated the appeal that the house be passed on to the rightful owner, upon attaining the age of majority. ENDS
