Illegal hunting warrisome

22 Mar 2022

Residents of the Okavango panhandle have been warned against illegal hunting in the Okavango Delta.

The warning follows an incident in which a 53-year-old man of Beetsha was attacked and killed by a buffalo while on an illegal hunting mission.

Seronga Police Station commander, Superintendent Peter Masole urged residents to desist from illegal hunting.

Narrating on how the man met his ordeal, he said it was reported that the deceased, accompanied by two men aged 34 and 48, left for a hunting expedition on Sunday and along the way came across a buffalo and one of them fired a  shot at it.

Superintendent Masole noted, however, that the buffalo did not die, but became aggressive and attacked the deceased, leaving him with severe injuries all over the body while the other two men found a place of safety atop a nearby tree.

The duo, he said, managed to chase away the buffalo and rushed the deceased to the local clinic, but was certified dead upon arrival.

The police chief stated that the two men were helping the police with investigations, adding that they would be charged for hunting without licences.

Superintendent Masole urged the public to report any suspicious activities of hunting at the delta.

Residents, he said, should come to terms with the fact that government issued hunting quotas to community trusts in an effort to ensure controlled hunting. ENDS
