Member of Parliament for Tonota, Mr Pono Moatlhodi has decried Tonota Primary School’s poor Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) results.
Speaking during the handing over of a photocopying machine by the Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) to the school’s special needs unit on Friday, Mr Moatlhodi said it must be put to good use to produce good results.
“I am very much concerned about PSLE results in Tonota, especially at Tonota Primary School,” he stressed.
Mr Moatlhodi, who is also the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, wondered what could have happened to the school, which used to perform exceptionally well.
He commended BDC for its generosity, calling for the cordial relationship to be nurtured.
Tonota Primary School head, Mr Talks Maleka revealed that the photocopying machine was not the first gift by BDC, adding that the company constructed a classroom block in 2013.
He appealed to other companies to follow suit, adding that education was a huge investment, which government could not afford to undertake alone.
He, therefore, commended the cordial relationship between Tonota Primary School and BDC and also requested other companies to lend a helping hand in the education sector.
Mr Maleka also commended Tonota political leadership for taking basic education seriously, as it was the foundation of any nation.
The BDC representative, Mr Kebareileng Lebalang said the donation was part of the corporation’s corporate social responsibility, revealing that BDC had made similar donations to other schools to improve the education sector.
Mr Lebalang explained that BDC would continue to give back to the community as government could not carry out all developments.
Mr Lebalang said education in Botswana was on a downfall spiral because it was no longer taken seriously by all stakeholders, thus appealed to parents to play their role in the education of their children.
Giving a vote of thanks, Tonota Sub-district Council deputy chairperson, Mr Andy Boatile also commended BDC for the donation, promising that it would be put to good use.
Councillor Boatile said education, which was the bedrock of the develop of any country, could not be achieve without the involvement of all stakeholders. ENDS
