North West District completes land layout plans

15 Mar 2022

North West District (NWD) has successfully completed layout plans for plot allocation in 57 out of 59 villages. Briefing the NWD full council sitting on Monday, council chairperson, Mr Kebareeditse Ntsogotho stated that plots had been assessed for the Strategic Environmental Assessment and surveyed and were currently being allocated.

The chairperson expressed pride over the achievement and pointed out that NWD was the only district to achieve the stages. He applauded the land board leadership for a job well done and urged them to continue with the good work. Councilor Ntsogotho highlighted that Tawana Land Board had targeted to allocate 5 652 plots during the 2021/2022 financial year of which as at end of February 2022, the board had allocated 2 699 residential plots.

He said Gumare Sub Land Board targeted to allocate 342 plots and ended up allocating 746 plots, whereas Seronga Sub Land Board allocated 544 plots against a target of 500 plots. Mr Ntsogotho said Sehithwa Sub Land Board only had 61 residential plots available at Toteng village which were all allocated.

He said that the waiting list for Nxaunxau village was all allocated and extra plots remained.

“This is something worth celebrating as North West District because in the whole of Botswana no other village has achieved this result. I would therefore, like to thank Gumare Sub Land Board for this exceptional performance,” Mr Ntsogotho said.

However, he indicated that Shakawe and Maun sub land boards were still allocating plots and had not met their targets. He stated that some people who applied for residential plots were rejected because they had previously been allocated plots elsewhere in the tribal area as per the provisions of the Botswana Land Policy.

Moreover, Councilor Ntsogotho said the Board had observed that people were slow in developing plots citing lack of services at allocated areas and unclaimed inheritances as reasons causing delays.

The chairperson said the board had floated a tender for 301 business plots which would be closed end of March and expected to be allocated in the coming financial year. He said the plots were categorised as 25 commercial, 166 industrial, 29 civic and community, 14 tourism, 46 multi residential, seven corner shops, two local centers and seven plots for churches.
