Committee sensitises residents on national census

Members of the public have been hailed for their positive response in outreach activities organised as part of the build-up towards the population and housing census.
Census publicity committee member Mr Leamame Tebele said in an interview after the activation and publicity event at the Francistown bus rank recently that the committee’s efforts to create awareness on population and housing census were paying off.
“We received positive response from the community who were eager to learn more about the importance and benefits of a census to the country and its community,” he said.
Mr Tebele said the residents participated by responding to questions that were asked by committee members while others posed questions to the committee.
He said the committee chose the bus rank as it had a considerable movement of people.
He said by using the bus rank, they reached out to a large number of people travelling to various destinations who in turn would share the important census message with other members of the community in their neighbourhood.
During mobilisation, Mr Tebele told the members of community that the census provided the overall outlook of population demographics which informed the government on development and service delivery.
He noted that the census also provided the structure of the population in terms of gender, economic activities, marital status, age and other necessary information.
Mr Tebele said statistics collected from the population and housing census would form baseline data for planning, development and democratic processes.
The data collected, he said, would play a significant role in the country’s democracy as statistics would influence the delimitation of boundaries for Parliamentary Constituencies and Council Wards. ends
