Brigades critical to economic growth

Brigades and Technical Colleges have the potential to boost the economy if prioritised, Cresta Maun General Manager Mr Ferdinand Sebinyane has said.
Mr Sebinyane who was at Maun Technical College’s excellent awards ceremony in Maun on Friday said a lot could be learnt from most industrialised and developed countries who had prioritised Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in their various education systems.
Nonetheless, Mr Sebinyane urged students to take their education seriously, noting that Botswana spent a lot in education hoping that students would excel, become successful and give back to the economy.
He also challenged parents to give their children the necessary support for them to do better in their studies.
Mr Sebinyane said the awards should motivate all the recipients in the categories of learners, lecturers and non-teaching staff while those not awarded should be motivated to improve.
Maun Technical College Principal Ms Pono Saubi said the college currently had 376 students against the 700 capacity and also functioned with 170 staff members.
Ms Saubi said the college was mandated to produce artisans that were globally competitive and could be marketable or self-employed upon completion of their studies.
“We want to see our college as the best with quality products in the country,” she said.
She said they intended to engage industry players to share ideas on how best they could produce skills required by the industry.
Ms Saubi further urged the students to be self-disciplined and guard against ill behaviours that could destroy their future. ENDS
