Gap in STEM careers due to gender based stereotype

Gender disparity still exists in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

An official from Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), Ms Serwalo Mokgosi said gender-based gap in STEM professions across the world were caused by stereotypes.

Officiating at the International Women’s Day activity organised by the Department of Gender Affairs in collaboration with the university here on Tuesday, Ms Mokgosi said some careers such as most Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines were male dominated.

Therefore, she said women who ventured into them had to prove that they had what it took to excel as there was heightened scrutiny.

Moreover, she said women’s contributions were often ignored and were paid less than their male counterparts.

In addition, Ms Mokgosi said women lacked mentorship and career development opportunities in the male dominated industries.

She, therefore, urged parents to come forth, mentor, motivate and encourage the girl child to be focused in their choice of any Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics career.

Meanwhile the chairperson of Palapye Administration Authority, Councillor Khumoyame Lekoko said the country was doing its best to respects the rights of women.

Councillor Lekoko said Botswana was now offering equal opportunities to women across industries, including in leadership.

She applauded women who braved the male dominated industries such as mining.

Kgosi Martha Lebang of Palapye said the motive behind the day was reflect on achievements made in gender equality across all spheres of the society and to recognise women who excelled in various fields.

Kgosi Lebang pleaded with women to be courageous, stand together in safeguarding their future as well as working with their male counterparts in improving gender equality.

She also urged women to support and uplift one another.

The International Women’s Day was commemorated under the theme; Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow. ENDS
