Keep fighting for gender equality - Morwaeng

09 Mar 2022

Women need to continue fighting for gender equality in order to have a sustainable tomorrow, says Molepolole South MP, Mr Kabo Morwaeng.

Speaking during International Women’s Day commemoration in Molepolole on Tuesday,  Mr Morwaeng  also encouraged women to appreciate themselves.

He said they should know their value as powerful leaders and major change makers.

Mr Morwaeng, who is Minister of Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, said women should be celebrated for their efforts in making Botswana  what it was today.

Ms Peggy Sechele, fondly known as Mohumagadi Sechele,  said she saw it fit to be part of an occasion that celebrated women because unlike in the past,  their contribution was now recognised.

She expressed gratitude that leaders now recognised that women were as competent as men.

Ms Sechele encouraged women to unite so that they could achieve great things in life.

“This will also pave the way for other women and the girl child to also be great and influential leaders of tomorrow,” she added.

Women were also urged to utilise government programmes to improve their livelihoods.

Another speaker, Ms Kerapetse Sebolai of Mmenkokodi Day Care advised fellow women to never be discouraged by their backgrounds but to instead believe they could achieve anything if they worked hard.

“Just because you are a stay at home mother does not mean you can’t do anything to make a living,” she said.

In her remarks, keynote speaker Ms Mafhoko-Ditsa who is coordinator of Acceleration of Women Owned Micro Enterprises, applauded men, especially husbands, for changing their unprogressive view of women as only housewives and not individuals who could make a living for themselves.

“I also believe that there should be adequate protection for all women and children so that they can live free from fear and violence,” she said.BOPA
