Young Love Botswana Organisation’s programme: Teaching at the Right Level is hoped to improve academic performance of schools in Maun subregion.
The programme has so far been introduced to about 17 schools in Maun sub-region.
When briefing Maun Administrative Authority councillors about academic performance of schools in the sub-region, the sub-region chief education officer, Mr Brown Sethapelo said the programme, which had been introduced in Mochudi and Chobe areas, had proved to have positive impact in academic performance.
He said the Ministry of Basic Education partnered with Young Love Botswana Organisation to improve results in poorly performing regions.
Mr Sethapelo said the programme targeted pupils doing standard two to four under the concept of teaching at the right level with focus in Mathematics as well as reading and writing.
He said the programme was hoped to help learners who could not read and write even at secondary school.
The programme, he said, had been warmly welcomed by both teachers and pupils and the plan was to extend it to schools in the entire North West District.
“About 816 pupils have been enrolled for the programme so far,” he said.
Regarding academic performance in the Maun sub- region, Mr Sethapelo said there were schools that had improved while some performed poorly in Primary Schools Leaving Examination (PSLE), Junior Certificate and Botswana General Certificate in Secondary Education (BGCSE).
He noted that Sankoyo, Kgosietsile and Matsaudi primary schools were among the top 10 schools in PSLE in Botswana with 100 per cent, 90.5 per cent and 85.7 per cent passes respectively.
Mr Sethapelo said Kareng, Khwai and Nxaraga primary schools on the other hand were the poorest performing schools in PSLE in the Maun Sub-region.
At the JC level, he said Maitlamo Junior School in Maun topped while Ngami in Sehithwa and Sekgoma in Tsau were the lowest.
In the BGCSE, Mr Sethapelo said Maun Senior School improved by five per cent to 21 per cent.
He talked about the need to train teachers on instructional supervision and frequent visits to schools to help improve results in the sub-region.
Sedie ward councillor, Mr Kaukapita Kaukapita stressed the importance of recognising best performing schools such as Sankoyo and Kgosietsile and motivate them to maintain excellent results while nominated councillor, Mr Bareetsi Bogaisang hailed the Young Love programme as a good initiative and expressed hope that it would reach poorly performing schools in the Ngami area.
