Budgetary constraints hinder plans

Government plans to make Nata a fully-fledged sub-district but that had not been possible due to budgetary constraints.
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Mr Mabuse Pule said this when responding to a question from Nata-Gweta legislator, Mr Polson Majaga in Parliament on Tuesday.
Mr Pule said Nata currently operated as a service centre and not a sub-district.
He said the establishment of Nata Sub-District was approved in 2008 and prioritized to be implemented during National Development Plan 11 (NDP 11) and District Development Plan (DDP) 8.
The assistant minister pointed out that due to prevailing economic situation, government adopted a phased approach where the first phase entailed developing a Service Centre, headed by a coordinator at D3 salary scale.Phase 2 envisaged establishment of a fully Sub-District but that had not been possible due to budgetary constraints.
The Service Centre provides some selected services including Social and Community Development, Environmental Health, Self Help Housing Agency, Roads, Architecture and Buildings (Maintenance Division), Revenue Services and Matimela and Bye-Law. He said there was also an Assistant Director at D1 salary scale who coordinates Central
Government extension services, such as the National Registration (Omang), land board, Youth, Sport and Culture, Agriculture, Tribal Administration, Education and Botswana Police Service.
MP Majaga had asked the minister to update parliament on progress made to enable Nata Sub-District to function at Sub-District level. ENDS
