Education only way to economic living standards improvement

13 Feb 2022

Education is the only way Batswana can improve the country’s economy and their standard of living.

This was said by Molepolole South MP, Mr Kabo Morwaeng on Saturday during  a  Kweneng academic activation walk organised by Youth Of Excellence International in partnership with the Ministry of Basic Education locally.

Mr Morwaeng, who is Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration said building a strong foundation from reception was therefore imperative.

That way children would have higher chances to do well up to tertiary level and become responsible leaders of tomorrow, he said.

Mr Morwaeng said a strong foundation could also help Botswana achieve its goal of transforming into a knowledge-based nation.

“I would like to encourage all parents to actively participate in improving children’s academic performance by going to school whenever needed and be involved in school functions. They should not only come when there is an emergency,” he said.

The Molepolole South legislator also urged teachers to have a vision of learners performing well which would enable them not to lose hope.

He called on all education stakeholders to unite and find ways of attaining academic excellence.

Speaking at the event, Youth Of Excellence International director, Mr Lawrence Salobati said the event’s aim was to engage all stakeholders, parents and school system in building the learner.

He announced his organisations’ plans to introduce floating trophies for the recognition of good performance by both learners and schools.

The director explained that the move was meant to encourage and motivate children to work harder.

He said the organisation could also be approached on issues of improving the education system.

“Schools can invite us to talk to students, guide and motivate them to get better results,” he said.

Kweneng District Council chairman, Mr Motlhophi Leo  lamented that vandalism in schools such as destruction of power sockets and breaking  of windows had become commonplace.

He said vandalism made school buildings unsafe and unattractive for learning.

“I encourage you children to appreciate the little you have and take care of it,” Mr Leo said. Ends
