Public participation in constitutional review important

Water Utilities Corporation has collaborated with Debswana Jwaneng mine to address water challenges in Sese, Jwaneng/Mabutsane member of parliament has said.
Addressing a kgotla meeting in Sese on Thursday, Mr Mephato Reatile said population increases over the years had rendered the old water tank insufficient to supply the whole village.
As a result, plans were underway to install a bigger tank and a pipeline to increase water pressure.
“During inspection, it was realised that the existing tank is small and cannot efficiently supply the whole village, and therefore the two companies are working together towards supplying a better tank and increasing water pressure,” he said.
Regarding the upcoming constitutional review exercise, Mr Reatile said it called for public participation and cooperation and appealed to residents to prepare and position themselves to submit their contributions towards the constitutional review.
He said the exercise called on Batswana to familiarise themselves with the existing constitution in order for them to effectively participate.
He noted that the review was a major exercise that involved a holistic evaluation of the old constitution and hopefully include as many people as possible, to afford them an opportunity to submit their views.
For his part, Sese Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Toba Rabasimane appealed to authorities to ensure that the constitutional review consultations reached all Batswana for a fair process. He said partial consultations usually conducted in bigger villages denied others an opportunity to contribute.
“The constitutional review is a welcome development but as Sese residents and others in small villages we appeal to the government to ensure that we are equally consulted.
We do not want a situation where consultative meetings affecting us are held in big villages like Kanye or Mabutsane, as is usually the case,” he submitted.
Mr Rabasimane further said poor state of internal roads were not only bad for vehicles but also a health hazard to residents.
He said the volume of vehicles in the village called for regular grading of the roads, especially around public places such as the school and clinic.
He also said Sese clinic should be expanded to include critical facilities such as a maternity wing, to avoid patients travelling to Jwaneng for such services. ENDS
