Police need public support - legislator
11 Jan 2022
Members of public have been urged to support law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime.
This was said by Tati West Member of Parliament, Mr Simon Moabi in Zwenshambe Monday.
He was responding to Kgosi Moses Mabutho of Zwenshambe, who decried a spate of home intrusions whereby residents were attacked and their property stolen.
The police, said Mr Moabi, could not fight and win against crime alone as it was a complex phenomenon that required concerted efforts from the public.
He, therefore, appealed to the public to join forces with the police in the fight against crime.
Kgosi Mathubo had, in his welcome remarks, told the area Member of Parliament that some residents sustained serious injuries during these intrusions.
He, however, praised the police for the quick response and perpetual visibility in the village.
The traditional leader had also complained about loud noise, especially during festive season.
He said the police were unable to control the situation as perpetrators had obtained permits from authorities.
Kgosi Mabutho said even though people were allowed to enjoy themselves during the festive season, they must also balance their rights against those who wanted to enjoy a peaceful and quiet environment.
The traditional leader further appealed for the elevation of the village health post to a fully-fledged clinic.
The village, he said, had grown in terms of population and the local health post was overwhelmed and congested, especially during this era of COVID-19.
He commended Zwenshambe Primary School for their good performance in Primary School Leaving Examinations (PS LE) results.
Credit went to the school head, Mr Bawana Stephen, whom he commended for his leadership style, which led the school to continuously perform exceptionally well for consecutive years.
As for the upgrading of the health post, the Member of Parliament informed the residents that the project had been included in the 2022/23 financial year.
On other issues, the Member of Parliament said Zwenshambe had a waiting list of 306 people who applied for residential plots.
He said the figure was not that big looking at the fact that the youth were reluctant to apply for residential plots.
The Member of Parliament, therefore, encouraged the youth to apply for residential plots, saying land was an asset and that having a shelter was one of the basic needs of life as it promoted one’s dignity.
Village development committee member, Mr Messiah Gwaloba also underscored the need to upgrade the local health post into a clinic as well as to increase the number of nurses at the post.
He also decried lack of doctors at Masunga Primary Hospital, adding that the district was huge and deserved doctors.
Mr Gwaloba also requested for a police post in the village, saying the village had been experiencing a spate of criminal activities in recent years.
He also said the agricultural demonstrator, who was based in Zwenshambe, was overworked as he covered a lot of villages in the district.
Mr Gwaloba, therefore, appealed for additional officers to ease the workload. Ends
