Motorists have been implored to act responsibly during the festive season in order to reduce road traffic accidents. Maun Traffic Police Sub Inspector Tshiamo Sejakgomo made the call at a road safety prayer session, organised by the Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) in Maun on Friday.

Sub Inspector Sejakgomo said 17 fatalities were registered in 2019 in which 19 people died, while 26 serious accidents and 385 minor accidents were registered the same year. He noted 12 fatal accidents were registered in 2020 in which 13 people died while 23 serious accidents and 136 minor accidents were registered the same year.

He said that six fatal accidents, in which eight people died had been registered beginning 2021. Thirteen serious accidents and 93 minor accidents had been registered. Sub Inspector Sejakgomo said that the slight decline in the number of accidents for this year was attributable to lockdowns. Maun Ministers Fraternal additional member, Pastor Mpumelelo Ncube advised motorists to drive responsibly to save lives.

Pastor Ncube said that bad behavior on the roads caused loss of lives and negatively affected the economy of the country. He said road safety prayers were meant to help people do right and save lives.

DRTS station manager, Mr Ontlametse Tiroyakgosi said it was important to seek guidance from God. Mr Tiroyakgosi said that loss of lives due to road traffic accidents negatively affected remaining family members, both emotionally and economically. Ends
