Community collaboration effective to combating crime

15 Dec 2021

The police alone cannot win against crime, while partnership with communities provides assurance that criminals can be stopped.

This was the central message delivered by Gaborone West Police during a recent crime prevention workshop for Gaborone Phase 4 community. Crime Prevention Officer Sub Inspector Thembinkosi Bafana said the workshop was meant to empower the community through crime prevention strategies, especially in view of how criminals were now using technology to carry out their nefarious deeds.

He said through the workshop, they hoped to enhance participants’ knowledge and understanding of community policing, as well as strengthen their involvement in crime prevention.

The police had over the years, realised that community policing gave residents control of their life and allowed the law to become part of those communities.

This was in contrast to having an increased police presence, which, while it made residents feel more secure, also interfered with their sense of freedom and control of their lives, he said.

He urged the community to assist police by participating, donating towards, and volunteering for community policing.

For his part Kgosi Baloi Motlamma of Phase 4 customary court applauded Gaborone West police for hosting the workshop saying it came at the right time when crime rates were set to rise as the festive season approached.

Community policing helped to build a strong union between the people and police as it brought the two together.

Kgosi Motlamma assured the attendants that his community would work hand in hand with the police to combat crime in the area. Ends
