The US government has contributed P146 million to fight coronavirus in Botswana, US ambassador to Botswana stated Tuesday when handing over two isolation wards at Bobonong Primary Hospital, each with eight beds and private ablution.

Mr Craig Cloud explained that the funds were used to construct isolation facilities, improve emergency supply chains and address HIV-related COVID-19, and provide vaccinations.

When handing over the wards, part of the multiple facilities around the country US is donating to help combat COVID-19, Mr Cloud said the wards were part of a broader US effort to help Botswana’s economy and “serve as an example of what our two great countries can achieve together.”

Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Edwin Dikoloti cautioned Batswana not to be complacent  rather, vigilance still was importance given the threats of new Omicron variant .

Dr Dikoloti said the need for preparations was also instigated by the fourth wave which had already affected some parts of the world including some neighbouring countries.

“I therefore, wish to urge Batswana and all residents of this country to always remain vigilant and abide by all COVID-19 protocols,” Minister Dikoloti appealed and warned the variant was highly mutative and transmissible. Therefore, the minister urged Batswana and residents not to lose guard and continue adhering to COVID-19 protocols.

He thanked the embassy for the facilities and US government for supporting Botswana’s development efforts in various sectors.

Minister Dikoloti said that the facilities were befitting for Bobirwa region which faced multiple health related challenges.

The region is reportedly prone to Malaria and infant diarrhea among other diseases.

“It is now common cause that when this pandemic hits hard, as it did in the July and August period, hospital beds can be filled up with no room to accommodate other patients, including those suffering from other diseases,” Minister Dikoloti said .

For his part, MP for Bobonong constituency, Mr Taolo Lucas hailed the US for commitment towards fighting COVID-19.

“I would like to appreciate the US for commitment to help the world get out of COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mr Lucas who added that by helping the world, the assistance trickled down to Botswana and ultimately his constituents.

Mr Lucas also commended Ministry of Health and Wellness saying it was not doing badly in appreciating the challenges and needs of his electorate.

However, the MP challenged the ministry to deliver on a 70 bed primary hospital billed for Bobonong. He said that the hospital would help decongest the current facility.

The MP said that the isolation facilities may be used for other admissions once COVID-19 pandemic was defeated. BOPA
