Morula school celebrates academic excellence

28 Nov 2021

Morula school Friday celebrated  its top achiever, Fadil Anver, who made Selebi Phikwe community proud by attaining 12 A*s during the 2020 International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations.

Fadil, who is currently pursuing A levels, was also declared the top student in Geography and Information and Communication Technology nationwide.

Speaking at an Awards ceremony at Morula school in Selebi Phikwe on Friday, Fadil said hard work, discipline and perseverance had paid off for him.

He said 2020 was a challenging year because of COVID-19, which resulted in a lock down that affected learners, who had to sit for examinations that year.

He said many had expected the majority of learners to perform poorly, but he and other Morula school pupils defied the odds by performing outstandingly despite challenging circumstances.

He attributed the success to strong support from teachers, who gave them extra lessons everyday including weekends to compensate for lost time.

He said together with fellow pupils, he sat for exams well prepared because the teachers availed all the materials needed for them to pass the examination.

He encouraged Morula pupils to always strive for improvement and never give up because ‘hard work pays’.

“It is not about being the best, but it is about being the best you can be.”

School head, Mr Peter D’Arcy commended Fadil and other top achievers for a job well done, attributing their success to the hard work and commitment the teachers devoted to the pupils over the past years.

He said Morula school had the ability to deliver to the highest standards, having been offering IGCSE for the past 20 years.

He said as soon as pupils started high school, they were enrolled into the IGCSE programme, hence ‘the superior results’.

He said Morula school prided itself with low teacher-student ratio coupled with a fully-fledged computer laboratory and interactive boards placed across the school, which contributed to good academic results.

He also explained that Morula school, which offered both primary and secondary education, was looking forward to starting Cambridge primary examinations in 2022, which would run alongside the local Primary School Leaving Examinations PSLE).

Mr D’Arcy further said school was not about academics, but growing up with children that one could look up to and facilitating productivity and better results, adding that teaming with others boosted morale and relieved stress.

He said the school provided a conducive environment for pupils’ achievements to go beyond classroom and extend to every aspect of their social lives.

Education director for Central Region, Mr Sonny Mooketsi gave top achievers a pat on the back for a job well done, particularly Fadil, whom he said put the central region on the map.

He thanked teachers, parents and the community for their collective effort towards the development of young talents.

He commended schools in Selebi Phikwe for always doing exceptionally well in the PSLE and Junior Certificate Examinations, adding that the town’s sub-region was the best among all the 10 sub- regions comprising the central region.
