Road infrastructure pivot to economic growth

Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) has completed six road-paving projects while five are still ongoing. Speaking during a virtual sub-council session, Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) chairperson, Mr Simon Ramaphoi said some of the ongoing projects included the Marapalalo, Sebako kgotla and Tsopye access roads.
He said among the contractors who were recently allocated sites two were still mobilising while construction works had already commenced with one.
He noted that at the end of the road projects, a total 3.6km of road would have been paved. Mr Ramaphoi said that would go a long way in easing some travel and service limitations that the district had.
“The grading of Kanye internal roads is also ongoing as per schedule, but they are behind schedule due to frequent breakdown of plant and equipment,” he said. As for public road links, he said the council had in the previous quarter managed to grade Sesung-Selokolela and Selokolela-Gasita-Lorolwane roads.
The only road approved for dry grading in KAA was Tshweneyagae-Gasegwagwa, he said.
Mr Ramaphoi said as for output and performance-based road contracts, the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC) terminated Elsamex-ITNL JVCA contract with immediate effect.
In effort to complete the critical pending works, he said the government agreed with their partner World Bank to have companies that were sub contracted at the termination to be re-engaged.
He informed councillors that three bidding documents had been given out to three different contractors and evaluation of the bids were ongoing.
“The scope of these works include drainage rectifications and completion of drainage works at Kanye access road “BG” shopping mall and Moshana,” he said.
The chairman pointed out that after negotiations and awarding of such contracts, the Ministry of Transport and Communications would continue monitoring the works to ensure compliance with specifications.
The works were expected to be complete within six months, he said.
Explaining the output and performance-based road contracts (OPRCs), he said it aimed at increasing efficiency and effectiveness of road operations in the Southern District. ENDS
