Mr Christopher Seagateng has been elected as Deputy Secretary General of Pan African Youth Union, Africa’s largest youth movement.
Making history for the country as the first Motswana to assume a role in the executive committee since unions inception in 1962, Mr Seagateng in an interview, said he was excited for the mission as he already had a strategy in place for his three year tenure.
Driven by passion to bring change in his community, Seagateng, youth philanthropist , ventured into youth empowerment at the age of 18 years and has never looked back since.
He said since he was an avid advocate for youth matters particularly youth employability, his intention once he assumed office was to advocate for youth development initiatives not only in Botswana but the rest of the continent.
“The youth of our country are immensely talented and could benefit immensely from exchange of talents between the African states for which I intended to lobby and advocate for,” he said.
Mr Seagateng stated that he intended to brand the country to the rest of Africa as well especially in the tourism sector.
Moreover, he said his journey towards his candidacy was without its own challenges. Talking about his road to the elections, Mr Seagateng said that limited resources was a hindrance but with assistance from the Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC), he was able to travel to Niger, where the elections were held.
“Throughout the journey, I kept on reflecting on an ideal Motswana youth and I have since realised that our dreams are possible,” he said.
For her part, BNYC Chairperson, Ms Moitshepi Matsheng expressed her delight at Seagateng’s achievement.
Ms Matsheng said Seagateng’s resilience and his steadfast attitude towards youth development was inspiring and urged him to continue raising the country’s flag high.
“This marks a huge achievement for our nation as it is the first time since PYU’s inception that we have a local representative in its executive committee,” she said.
Ms Matsheng committed the council’s full support and commitment to Seagateng’s new position and tenure.
