Government spends over P73m on lawsuits
22 Jul 2021
Parliament has heard that the Attorney General’s Chamber has spent over P73.6 million on lawsuits on behalf of government between 2016 and 2020.
Responding to a parliamentary question on Wednesday, Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Kagiso Mmusi also told Parliament that the Court of Appeal, High Court divisions and magistrate courts had received a total number of 3 942 lawsuits filed by individuals and business entities against government in those five financial years.
Also, Minister Mmusi said the number of prosecutions by government against individuals and business entities over alleged crimes was 51 972 from 2016 to 2020.
“It must be appreciated from the outset that the fact that a decision made by government being challenged does not necessarily make such a decision unfair. Government does not maintain a computerised system which is a challenge,” Mr Mmusi said.
However, he indicated that the ministry was exploring various options to facilitate interfacing of the existing case management systems and also extend the service to the Attorney General’s Chamber...
Molepolole North MP, Mr Oabile Regoeng had asked the minister to update Parliament on the number of lawsuits filed with the courts of law by individuals and business entities against government over alleged unfair decisions from 2016 to 2020. ends
