No funds to refurbish post offices

BotswanaPost is financially constrained to embark on the refurbishment of post offices around the country.
That was said by transport and communications minister, Mr Thulagano Segokgo in response to a parliamentary question on Tuesday.
“We are currently pleading with government to provide recapitalisation, which will assist us to renovate the post offices,” Minister Segokgo said.
He added that BotswanaPost management was also aware and concerned about the working conditions of employees in post offices.
Minister Segokgo indicated that BotswanaPost, however, continuously benchmarked against peer group organisations in the local market as part of its strategy to improve the wellbeing of its employees.
He also told Parliament that the organisation had an approved salary structure and priority was given to employees before external advertisement, where opportunities arose.
On the pay structure, Mr Segokgo indicated that BotswanaPost salaries ranged at the lowest scale of Band 1 at P3 553 and Band 10 as the highest scale at P41 167.
He observed that since BotswanaPost was governed by the Employment Act, it had also developed policies and procedures that governed how work was done.
Mr Segokgo was answering a question from Ngami MP, Mr Carterpilla Hikuama, who had wanted an update on the state of postal services employees as well as their terms of employment and conditions of service.
Mr Hikuama wanted to know the highest and lowest positions and their salary scales respectively and if BotswanaPost had a scheme of service and progression opportunities.
He also asked if the minister was aware of the poor working conditions of BotswanaPost employees throughout the country, more especially in the Ngamiland District. ENDS
