No plans to name A1 road after former President Masire

Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Dumizweni Mthimkhulu says there are policies and practice for government to honour and name some public facilities after those who have had major contributions to the socio-economic development of the country.
Mr Mthimkhulu told Parliament that said such a process was carefully done to ensure that it was well targeted to make a monumental mark.
He said there were no plans to consider naming A1 road after Botswana’s second and longest-serving President Sir Q. K. J. Masire, Mahalapye Hospital after Dr
Kenneth Koma, and Nata-Maun Road after Mr Motsamai Mpho.
However, these names, as well as others, will always be considered going forward, he said.
Mr Mthimkhulu noted that some positive spin-offs might accrue due to the naming of the facilities such citizens.
These benefits include but are not limited to enhanced tourism attractions, citizens’ appreciation and happiness for recognising one of their own, he said.
“As I have indicated, such as action requires a well thought of process to identify the suitability of facilities and whether that recognition will be sufficient on the person concerned.
It will certainly not be proper to use such a distinguished name on a facility, which in the eyes of the people is not a real landmark,” he said.
Kanye North MP, Mr Thapelo Letsholo had asked the minister whether he would consider honouring some of Botswana’s political stalwarts; what positive would accrue as a result of this move.
He also wanted to know what would stop the minister from doing the same. ENDS
