Electricity tariff increase
22 Mar 2021
Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has announced an upward adjustment of electricity tariffs by three per cent effective April 1.
This follows an approval by the Minister of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security.
A press release from BERA says the three per cent increase was arrived at after following established application and approval processes.
It says Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) applied to the regulator for a five per cent increase in order to deliver on its mandate of delivering reliable power supply.
“BERA subjected this application to public and other stakeholders consultations,” says the press release.
Furthermore, the media release says the regulator noted that BPC rates are not cost reflective and the corporation continues to be subsidised by government in order to cushion the public against high tariffs.
“It is important for BPC’s customers to note that for BPC to fulfil its mandate, it has to move towards cost reflective tariffs. BERA will ensure that this is done in a controlled manner,” says the press release.
The release further states that BPC electricity tariff remain competitive in the SADC region. ENDS
