Overall PSLE performance declines less than percentage point

The 2020 Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) results released yesterday show an insignificant decline of 0.89 per cent in overall performance at A-C grades from last year’s 74.33 to 73.44 per cent this year.
According to a Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) press release, the percentage of candidates obtaining Grade A in the examination has remained the same though an insignificant decline of 0.40 per cent, from 20.81 per cent in 2019 to this year’s 20.41 per cent, was observed.
“Proportion of candidates obtaining Grade B has also remained the same with an insignificant increase of 0.59 per cent from 18.09 per cent in 2019 to 18.68 per cent in 2020,” the release says.
It also says candidates at Grade C slightly declined by 1.12 per cent from 35.43 per cent last year to 34.31 per cent in 2020 while the proportion of candidates at Grade D remained the same with an insignificant decline of 0.15 per cent from 19.12 per cent in 2019 to 18.97 per cent this year.
The release says there has also been an insignificant increase of 1.01 per cent from 6.43 per cent in 2019 to 7.44 per cent in 2020 at Grade E.
“Almost all candidates who sat the 2020 PSLE qualified for the award of a grade,” the release says.
BEC says a total of 46 063 candidates wrote the 2020 examination showing a decrease in candidature of 3.06 per cent over the 2019 figure of 47 518.
The 2020 cohort had 22 762 females and 23 301 males, says the release adding that female candidates have outperformed their male counterparts in all subjects.
Candidates are informed that they will be able to access the results through the BEC website www.bec.co.bw as well as through the SMS line 16688 across all mobile networks.
“Additionally, the results will be distributed to the regional offices and to the centres through courier services and regional offices will access the results reports through Malepa system as well as CDs which will be delivered through courier services,” says the release.ends
