Lobatse Senior Secondary School is the first to benefit from Lesedi Ke Mpho, an initiative by The Bulb World.
Speaking during an event on Saturday, The Bulb World chief executive officer, Mr Ketshephaone Jacob, said the intention was to donate bulbs to all boarding schools in the country.
The project is done in partnership with First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) Foundation.
Mr Jacobs acknowledged that boarding pupils needed enough lighting to study.
He said, as a former teacher in a boarding school, he knew the suffering boarding pupils went through when they did not have enough lights.
“I was teaching in a junior secondary school at Mathangwane before quitting and I saw pupils suffering when there were no lights. I realised that light is extremely important,” he said.
He said boarding pupils needed lights in school because they did not have an option of going home to read like others.
Mr Jacob thus called for support from other companies to help the initiative achieve its objective of providing lights in all boarding schools in Botswana.
He said his company decided to give back to society through the initiative after it experienced positive market support.
“I founded this company in 2017 and our bulbs are now sold in every major retail supermarket in Botswana. I am happy to say people are buying our bulbs,” Mr Jacob said.
Ms Dorcus Kgosietsile from FNBB Foundation said the initiative would make a lifelong difference in the society.
She said FNBB Foundation was established to assist the society, and that was why they partnered with The Bulb World to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for boarding pupils.
She said The Bulb World was helping to improve the academic performance of pupils adding that up to now, the foundation had spent over P50 million on community projects.
Lobatse Senior Secondary School head, Mr Patrick Phiri expressed gratitude for the donation.
He said facilities in the school were now well illuminated. Mr Phiri said the school had a population of 364 boarding students. ends
