Mothers Union Centre, through Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored and Safe (DREAMS) initiative, intends to empower a girl child.

Briefing Mahalapye Sub-district Council on Tuesday, Mothers Union Centre coordinator, Ms Lesedi Selogelo, said they pushed for an empowered AIDS-free generation among women and girls.

“We target females between 9-24 years and we want to see every girl child living healthy, and having a brighter future,” she said.

She said they were working with stakeholders especially police and teachers, to address issues of gender based violence.

Through the DREAMS program, teachers and faith leaders were also trained on GBV issues so to pass the message.

Mrs Selogelo said they encouraged young women to speak out, whenever abused so that they could be helped. “We chose a girl child because she is more vulnerable, even in relationships,” she explained.

Although DREAMS focused on adolescent girls, she stated that life skills were provided for all, including a boy child, because they ‘do not want to leave a boy child behind.’ She said because of lack of transport they were unable reached out to the whole district. ends
