25 Sep 2013

The Student Representative Council (SRC) plays a critical role in the student community as they facilitate matters between students, management and relevant stakeholders.

This was said by the acting deputy permanent secretary for higher learning in the ministry of education, Mr Peter Choto at Limkokwing University inaugural ceremony of the 2013 SRC on September 24. Mr Choto said being an SRC member was an immense responsibility which should be taken seriously.

“You play an intermediary role between students and management and you should not take this role for granted,” he noted. He said SRC was a training ground for leadership as it gave the representatives an opportunity to display maturity and integrity. He advised them to stay away from violence as this would help make them reputable and trusted mediators.

Mr Choto indicated that the SRC needed to create a proper balance between the views from students and the government adding true leaders were not those who incited other students but those who helped to resolve problems.

The DPS told the SRC to be good ambassadors for the institution. He explained government was sometimes unable to meet all their needs but they had to be patient and bold and explain the situation to other students.

“I hope you won’t be known as a government of violence but a government of peace, be ready to learn from others,” he noted. The new SRC president Mr Thabiso Bimbo said the SRC was indebted to the student community who voted them into office.

He said they would be working hand in hand with the management to ensure that students need were addressed. Mr Bimbo pledged to lead by and respect consensus. He added he would have an open door-policy. “I know this is a huge responsibilities but I am ready to take it on,” he noted. ENDS
