Kokong residents complain about bad road

23 Sep 2013

Residents of Kokong in the Ngwaketse West constituency have decried the poor state of the 20km road from the Trans Kalahari Highway to their village. They expressed their concerns during a kgotla meeting addressed by the Vice President Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe recently.

Senior chief representative for Mabutsane Sub-district, Kgosi Kgakgamatso Moletsane said the gravel road had contributed to lack of developments in Kokong.

He said some public officers did not want to work in that village due to the poor state of the road, hence there was staff shortage in some government institutions. Thus, he called for the tarring of the gravel road.

“The best way is to put tarmac because even if it is graded it goes back to the initial state in a very short period of time,” he said. The Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Samuel Rapulane concurred with Kgosi Moletsane that the bad road hindered developments in their village.

He said currently, there was acute shortage of public transport because of the road, something he said endangered the lives of residents coming to and from Kokong. “Imagine what could happen to people if they wait for a very long time at the junction. Something has to be done about this road,” he said.

Mr Rapulane further called for the construction of the Khakhea/Morwamosu road, which passed through Kokong. The road, he said, had the potential to enhance tourism in the area by connecting Mabuasehube with the northern part of Botswana.

He said the road could also create employment for the local people due to businesses likely to be established. On other issues, the VDC chairman said the disability committee was recently formed in their village.

He also applauded Debswana mining company for building a house to a needy person as well as buying school uniform for five needy students from their village. Ends
