Police in Maun are investigating an incident in which a 7-year-old boy drowned in a sewage pond at Maitlamo Junior Secondary School at Disaneng ward in Maun.
Speaking in an interview, Maun Police Station commander, Superintendent Chenamo Orateng said the accident occurred on the afternoon of October 31.
Supt Orateng said the deceased, who was identified as a son to one of the teachers at the school, was alone when the incident happened.
Supt Orateng revealed that the deceased was found by his elder sibling in one of the sewerage ponds in the school. He said the body was retrieved from the pond by the police with the assistance of the North West District Council Fire Department and later certified dead by a doctor at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital.
The deceased was a Standard Two pupil at one of the primary schools in Maun. Meanwhile, Bonang Masolotate reported that Ramotswa police were investigating an incident in which a Standard Two pupil of Kgetheng Primary School in the village drowned in Ngotwane River.
Supt Keoagile Tau of Ramotswa police revealed in an interview on Monday that the eight-year-old drowned on Friday(October 30) afternoon.
Supt Tau said investigations have revealed that the boy had gone out with his peers for an unauthorised swimming session after school.
However, Supt Tau said their investigations established that when the unfortunate incident occurred, his peers deserted the place and kept silent about it.
He said later in the evening, the boy’s uncle became disturbed by his absence at home, only to discover from his friends that they left him at the river.
Supt Tau said the boy’s family spotted his cloths on the side of the river, then informed the police and search ensued.
