29 Oct 2020

Arts Without Limits (AWIL) College’s Bachelors’ Degree on Live Performance graduates on (Wednesday) October 28 showcased their talent as part of the examination process

to prepare themselves to hit the industry.

The examination was based on John’s Will and Baepi Ba Maikutlo live performances.

John’s Will is about a case of John Mareledi, which was centred on four women in the same household, who were all suspects in the death of the late John Mareledi, as everyone felt entitled to his assets.

Baepi Ba Maikutlo is about four labourers working in an oppressive environment, with no accountability from supervisors and each of the four had a story to tell and shed light upon.

When delivering a word to the students, AWIL Live Performance lecturer, Dr Mothusi Phuthego said students were majoring on stage and screen acting and he believed that they did well during their tenure of study and that they would be able to do well in the industry.

Dr Phuthego said students were expected to showcase creative talent based on the tuition they received during their four-year study, adding that for students to graduate, they must do well in their live examination and other assessments prescribed by the curriculum.

In an interview, Solo Monyane, a panelist during AWIL Live Performance, said graduates did well in executing the messages they wanted to sell to audience.

“The students presented amazing pieces with well written and followed pitch, yet the experimental theatre is very difficult, but the graduates did very well in their performances,” he said

Monyane applauded graduates for their strength, energy and knowledge of the desired choice on the stage.

He said they were powerful and confident in portraying their messages, saying that it had shown that they had gone through a process of identifying issues that were relevant to the context and issues were well researched.

Play writer for John’s Will and also a live performer, Thato Akoonyatse said John’s Will was a success and they were looking forward to do more in the industry.

She said they had an everlasting experience through John’s Will performance as women were playing roles that were mostly played by men in society.

Akoonyatse said they were live performing what was happening in society and believed that the message was well sent and they will have good marks. Ends
